Day 9 Conques

Sunday 25 September and I slept well in a double bed in a room to myself. Breakfast was the usual tartine then off into the very light rain that quickly stopped.

Interestingly there was a megaphone installation that you wound up then waited to hear part of a song, then wound up etc.

I have chosen this imperfect village view as it reminds me that there are still plenty of toilets along the way and today especially. This didn't stop one frenchman crouching behind the small crash bars at the side of the road with his trousers down by his ankles. Luckily I was walking on he opposite side of the road. 
Today was the first day I felt any walking fatigue so I didn't rush as I've a few more full days before a shorter day. It was a day of gradual ascents and descents with fantastic views and just a hint of autumn colour which will surely develop over the next three weeks. 

I continue to see the cattle crushes and this one has a roof attached to help preserve it. It's definitely a feature of the area like the grain stores in Galicia in Spain.

The town of Conques is a big destination and many will finish here and restart at a later date.
I am staying in the Abbaye Saint-Foy next to the large church and took the opportunity to do a 'full' wash though I doubt it will dry.

Day 1 Saint Privat d'Allier

Saturday 17 September and what a great first day's walking. It is autumn and the fields are being ploughed after the sweetcorn harvest. This reveals the rich crumbly volcanic soil that needs no further breaking down before it is resown. Coming out of Le Puy-en-Velay you can see the puy lentils at various stages of growth and I am disappointed I didn't try them. The landscape is still quite lumpy and bumpy which I assume is a result of the volcanic activity 2 million years ago, and because of this the fields are small but very fertile. Despite the scorching summer everything is green and lush.  I had seen a couple of rusting steel cattle crushes (cattle holding stations) that allow close interventions by farmer or vet. The one below is older but is the same design as is still used locally.  A Chapel that appears to emerge out of the landscape makes for a good excuse to pause. Day 28 Maslacq

Friday 14th October and with the weeks ticking by it can be hard to keep track of time; I travelled out on the 15th September so this is one month in France with 6 days walking to go including today. After three hours of tarmac along quaint country lanes I make it to my mid-point town and take time for a coffee and tarte-aux-pommes . I had enquired about sandwiches or cakes but was politely directed to the bakers round the corner and it was only by exploring the inner depths of this quirky eatery that I found the tart. I also found a pile of freshly baked madelaines but they were a special order and not for me. The coffee was ordinary but the tart was exceptional, soft buttery pastry, topped with yielding surgery apples and then a third layer of latticed pastry. As the madelaines were off limits (they smelled delicious but were a special order) and the place was yet to serve lunch I was cornered into a second routine coffee and another slice of the equisite tart. Day 10 Livinhac-le-haut

Monday 26 September brings a not unwelcome cooler day starting with a climb out of Conques that had an almost jungle feel to it; struggling up through the mist once I had exited the town itself.  The previous night the Abbey put on quite a show which included a concert, a talk about the stone carvings on the outside and a 10 minute long animated illumination of the carvings to highlight the stories, characters and what colours they may have been painted. The concert included an organ recital of Procol Harem's Whiter Shade of Pale and The Animal's House of the Rising Sun which is about a brothel though the music does have an ecclesiastical feel when performed on a church organ. This is the finale but the animated show highlights specific areas at a time. Another up the hill and down the hill day and I started out too brisk so weary towards the end.
