Inspiration and perspiration

I follow a couple of camino forums (fora?) and was drawn in to provide advice when a fit runner asked if he needed to do any walking training for his camino. Of course you need to get your walking legs and shoulders trained up for walking day after day with an 8kg rucksack. If only I'd followed my own advice as my pre-camino training consisted of preparing for a half marathon and all this after spending a month cycling. Not much walking in fact since my sub-200 mile coast to coast walk. Lots of perspiration happened clocking up running miles over an especially hot summer but where to get some quick fix inspiration? I leave London Thursday 15th September for Le Puy-en-Velay and start walking on the 17th doing a modest circa 15 miles a day average.

As you can see I turned to my old hero Mark Beaumont. I've talked about his 2008 round the world tour in my Brittany blog and his was very much a self supported challenge which I greatly admired. This second record breaking trip undertsken in 2017 had full backup and will be my luxury item as I walk the Massif Central, France's third largest mountain range. This book takes the place of a month's training.
